Feed Radiosondes

Pick up weather balloons with a small radio and add your station to the Arkansas picture. Everything you receive already goes to SondeHub; ArkSignal records the flights around Arkansas from there and lets you claim your station.
The Short Version
  1. Run radiosonde_auto_rx (a Raspberry Pi or any small Linux computer, an RTL-SDR radio and an antenna for 400-406 MHz) with SondeHub upload turned on and your call sign as the station name.
  2. Create an account and sign in, then open My Radiosonde Stations and claim your station by its call sign.
  3. Choose how your location is shown: General (rounded to about 6 miles, the default), Exact or Hidden. Your station then appears on Receiving Stations and the Balloon Map, with every flight it heard.
How It Works

National Weather Service balloons go up from Little Rock, Shreveport, Jackson, Springfield, Norman, Fort Worth and other sites twice a day and climb for about two hours. Receiving stations decode each balloon's telemetry (position, altitude, temperature, humidity, pressure, wind) and upload it to SondeHub, which shares it openly. ArkSignal listens to SondeHub's live feed, keeps the flights over and around Arkansas with their tracks and charts, works out which launch site each came from, and shows who heard it.

Nothing extra is installed on your station for ArkSignal: if it already uploads to SondeHub, it is already counted. Amateur high-altitude balloons are recorded too.

Claiming Your Station
  • Same call sign as your profile: add your call sign to your profile. Every station named with it, with or without a suffix (KD5VCF, KD5VCF-LR, KD5VCF-10, KD5VCF/P), is claimed for you automatically, as soon as the station is heard and whenever you open My Radiosonde Stations.
  • Any other name: the claim page gives you a short code. Put it in the antenna description in station.cfg (upload_station_antenna), restart auto_rx, and the claim completes when the portal sees it. An administrator can also approve a claim.
  • Stations that move (a chase car or portable station) are hidden on the public pages unless you choose Exact.
Your Data and Privacy
  • Telemetry is public flight data, shared by SondeHub under Creative Commons BY-SA 2.0; ArkSignal credits SondeHub on every page and what you download carries the same license.
  • Your position is shown only as you choose. The pages never show a more exact position than your choice, even though the upload itself carries the one you configured in auto_rx.
  • You can release a station or hide it from the lists at any time.
